Student United Way is a campus-based community change organization led by students that addresses critical education, income and health issues in their communities.
Every Student United Way chapter is a partnership between the local United Way, the college campus and the community at large. Despite the uniqueness of each chapter, Student United Way members are part of an international network of young people working to advance the common good. It is an opportunity for college students to engage in something bigger than self.
Student United Way is working towards United Way’s national goal to cut the number of high school dropouts in half. It is joining United Way’s efforts to recruit one million volunteer readers, tutors and mentors by setting goals, becoming volunteers, recruiting their peers and more.
Student United Way groups are active on the following Delaware campuses:
- Delaware State University
- Wilmington University
- Wesley College
The primary function of Student United Way is to offer college students a meaningful way to engage in United Way of Delaware’s work towards creating lasting positive social change around Early Education, College and Career Readiness, and Financial Stability. UWDE is advancing the common good by addressing the following goals:
College and Career Readiness
Increase the number of youth who meet developmental milestones, enter school ready to learn and successfully graduate from high school
Increase the number of individuals and families who have sufficient resources and support to achieve financial stability and independence
Community Impact Projects
- Develop literacy kits
- Host a community baby shower
- Construct a community garden
- Product a school supply drive
- Host a summer reading backpack drive
In addition to an opportunity to attend an annual Leadership Retreat and an Alternative Spring Break, students who participate in Student United Way gain:
- Valuable leadership skills
- Knowledge about community issues
- A better understanding of how UWDE is working to advance the common good
- An opportunity to make an impact in their community
