Literacy Week 2025

HERE ARE THE FACTS
"

According to the Delaware Dept. of Education, only

19%

of Delaware 3rd Graders from families with low incomes are proficient in reading.

The numbers don’t lie. Right now, young people across the state are struggling in school. A big reason for this is low reading proficiency. If children struggle to read, then they are likely struggling to learn. And if we don’t help them become better at reading, the research shows fewer of them will graduate from high school.

Literacy Week 2025 highlights our commitment to informing the community about the need for increased support and advocacy for our children. This event celebrates reading aloud, sharing stories, and promoting literacy and diversity in literature. The week is filled with engaging activities, such as author visits and volunteer-led reading sessions, resonating with the spirit of World Read Aloud Day and Read Across America. Keep an eye out for our comprehensive schedule of events, which includes author appearances, storytelling sessions, and unique activities designed for schools participating in the program.

Promote Literacy

Reading is a gateway to opportunity but reading proficiency among young learners in Delaware is not where it needs to be. We are working to change this.

Increase Book Ownership

Research shows that children who have their own books are more likely to read outside of school, enjoy reading, and do better in school.

Introduce Local Authors

Delaware is home to dozens of authors who write for young learners, especially. Some of these authors will share their books with students between February 24 – 28, 2025.

Create Read Aloud Opportunities

Reading aloud helps students improve information processing, vocabulary, and comprehension. It’s also a great tool that’s used to help motivate kids to read.

Literacy Week 2025

From February 24 -28, 2025, local authors and community leaders will visit Delaware schools for United Way of Delaware Literacy Week. Here’s the list of elementary schools and volunteers that will be participating throughout the state.

World Read Aloud Day 2024

United Way of Delaware, our partners, and our volunteers fanned out across Delaware to read to students, hand out books, and encourage a life-long love of reading! We are so grateful for all our partners and volunteers!

We never work alone because nothing gets done when you work by yourself. We work alongside generous community members, corporations, and other non-profits to help our young people become great readers and life-long lovers of learning.

Will you join us so we can help more kids?
