My Very Own Library
Grade-Level Reading
Research shows that students who build their own home libraries learn to love reading. United Way of Delaware’s My Very Own Library (MVOL) program provides free new books to students so they can build their own personal home libraries. When students can choose the books they want to call their own, they develop stronger literacy skills, which can lead to better test scores and a lasting love of and joy for reading.
The MVOL program is free for participating students, thanks to our generous partnership with Scholastic®.
Since the program’s inception in 2016, UWDE and our partners have provided over 484,000 books to students throughout Delaware. During this time, an average of 6,500 Delaware students received books each school year. Twenty-three Delaware schools have participated in MVOL in New Castle, Kent, and Sussex Counties.
FREE BOOKS
UWDE, with our partners, distributes an assortment of popular books for students to read and add to their home libraries.
FAMILY LITERACY PROGRAMS
MVOL events throughout the year engage, encourage, and support families in becoming better readers.
VIRTUAL AUTHOR VISITS
Students can listen to readings from authors, professional athletes, and community leaders when and where they want.
