financial empowerment
INSTABILITY AT HOME LEADS TO
INSTABILITY IN THE COMMUNITY.
Financial hardship doesn’t discriminate. It affects people from every neighborhood, race, religion, and profession. Today in Delaware and Salem County (NJ), we see more and more neighbors who can’t meet their basic needs, or are one unexpected expense away from a financial crisis. They are mothers and fathers, business owners, teachers, seniors, and veterans having to choose between paying bills or putting food on the table.
38% of Delawareans Can't Meet Their Basic Needs
We all need access to food, housing, and healthcare. In 2019, 38% of all Delawareans couldn’t afford their basic needs. For African Americans, that number rose to over 52%.
Unemployment Rose 36.8% Between March 2020-2021
No one was prepared for COVID-19. The shutdown devastated the workforce and our communities, causing unemployment rates to rise. Many families are still feeling the effects today.
Over a 12-yr Period, High-Wage Jobs Declined by 46%
In Delaware, between 2007-2019, low-wage jobs grew by 66%, while high wage positions disappeared just as quick. It’s tough to have hope when you work hard, but can’t pay the bills.
