Where Does Your Donation Go?
Since our founding in 1913, we have distinguished ourselves as public servants that boldly confront the challenges of African Americans and, hence, all Americans. Over the years, a wide range of programs addressing education, health, international development, and strengthening of the African American family have evolved. In realizing our mission, the Wilmington (DE) Alumnae Chapter provides an extensive array of public service initiatives through DST’s Five-Point Programmatic Thrusts. Your donations will help us make an even bigger impact through these focus areas.
Economic Development
Financial Fortitude topics include college and career preparation, financial planning for various stages of life, investment and savings, estate planning, consumer fraud prevention, and starting, managing and growing your business. The current focus is on supporting female and Black owned businesses across all areas of the economy. Â
Educational Development
The Jabberwock Scholarship Program has awarded over $1M in scholarships to deserving New Castle County young ladies in grades 11 and 12 since 2000. In addition, our Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy, Dr. Jeanne L. Noble Delta GEMS Institute, and EMBODI programs all help prepare young African-American girls and boys to become successful young adults.
Physical & Mental Health
Our health programs advocate the importance and benefits of lifestyle changes that affect longevity, morbidity and mortality and seek to address health disparities in the access and delivery of public health services. Journey to Wellness, is a signature physical and mental health program that our chapter promotes.
International Awareness & Involvement
Our chapter supports international projects such as: Thika Memorial Hospital in Kenya, Adailade Tambo School for the Physically Challenged in Johannesburg (South Africa), Delta Sigma Theta. Inc. Elementary School in Haiti, and The Delta House in Swaziland (Africa).
Political Awareness & Involvement
Delta Days in the Nation’s Capital, United Nations, and State Capital provide vehicles for members to engage with elected representatives on a wide variety of issues. The Get Out The Vote initiative in partnership with the New Castle County chapter of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) sponsors voter registration drives and non-partisan voter education forums in the local community.
