financial empowerment

INSTABILITY AT HOME LEADS TO
INSTABILITY IN THE COMMUNITY.

Financial hardship doesn’t discriminate. It affects people from every neighborhood, race, religion, and profession. Today in Delaware and Salem County (NJ), we see more and more neighbors who can’t meet their basic needs, or are one unexpected expense away from a financial crisis. They are mothers and fathers, business owners, teachers, seniors, and veterans having to choose between paying bills or putting food on the table.

Meet basic needs

In 2023, 40% of Delawareans Lived Below the ALICE Threshold

ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) refers to those who do not earn enough to comfortably afford basic expenses in the county where they live. They may have to forgo meals to make rent.*

Rise in unemployment

ALICE and Those In Poverty Increased from 2010 - 2023

Between 2010 and 2023, the total number of households in Delaware increased by 25%, the number of households in poverty increased by 20%, and the number of ALICE households increased by 27%.*

New jobs are low wage

70% of common jobs in Delaware pay less than $20 per hour

Of the 20 most common occupations in Delaware in 2023, 14 paid less than $20 per hour. In general, basic costs continue to outpace wages in low-wage jobs, and housing affordability remains a challenge statewide.*
