Many people are living in poverty and everyday brings forth a myriad of obstacles and worries. Because of this, families often choose between rent, medicine, utilities, or feeding their families. It’s an eye opening experience to feel what a month of living in poverty feels likes. Do you think you could survive?
Join us for an innovative, first-hand experience of what it’s like to live in poverty, Wednesday August 21, 2019 from 8am to 11 am, and then again from 12pm – 3pm. Our Poverty Simulation will take place at Delcastle Technical High School (1417 Newport Rd, Wilmington, DE 19804).
We are looking for volunteers and participants who would like to gain a new perspective on what it means to poor in America.

Below are some facts about poverty:
- Since 1980, most of the growth in wages has been concentrated among top earners, while wages for the average worker have stagnated.
- The average person would need to make $22.10 per-hour to afford a modest 2-bedroom apartment – nearly 3x the federal minimum wage.
- There are only 22 counties in the entire United States where a worker earning the minimum wage could afford to rent a one-bedroom home.
- 32% of households headed by single women are food insecure
- African Americans are 2x more likely to face hunger than white, non-Hispanic households
- According to No Kid Hungry, 80% of teachers said that they have seen students lose the ability to concentrate because they are hungry.
