Summer break should be a time for children to recharge and explore new experiences. However, for many students, it also brings the risk of learning loss, also known as “summer slide.” It disproportionately affects children from low-income families who may lack access to educational resources during the break. United Way of Delaware, through its innovative programs like Book Nook, is actively combating summer learning loss and helping all children to thrive academically.

Addressing the Challenge of Summer Learning Loss

According to the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s KIDS COUNT Data Book, alarming statistics highlight the educational challenges faced by Delaware’s youth. A significant percentage of fourth graders are not proficient in reading, eighth graders struggle in math, and chronic absenteeism is prevalent among students. These issues underscore the urgent need for effective interventions that bridge the learning gap, especially during the summer months.

The Governor’s Fellowship Program: Empowering Future Leaders in Education

The Governor’s Summer Fellowship Program is for Delaware high school students entering their junior or senior year. Designed to prepare young leaders for impactful roles in education, government, and their communities, this prestigious program offers paid opportunities at summer camps across the state. Participants receive invaluable on-site mentoring, networking opportunities with state leaders, and a platform to make meaningful contributions before they enter college.

Integrating Education with Summer Camps: The Role of Book Nook

A cornerstone of United Way of Delaware’s efforts is the Book Nook initiative, which seamlessly integrates learning into summer camp programming. This innovative approach keeps children engaged during their break and fosters a love for reading and learning. By embedding educational activities within the camp experience, Book Nook effectively reduces summer learning loss and equips children with essential skills for academic success. Book Nook’s K–8 synchronous online learning platform is designed to help schools easily implement high-impact tutoring for reading and math.

The Impact of the Governor’s Summer Fellowship: Insights from Participants

During a recent Governor’s Fellowship training session, a high school student from New Castle County recalled her summer camp children warming up to reading.

“At first, they were upset because I was taking them from outside and bringing them inside. They wanted to go to the pool and play with their friends. Eventually, it got better because all they wanted to do was go inside and read!”

A counselor from Sussex County added, “It’s easy. Kids feed off energy. You have to get them hyped up. Come in every day with a positive attitude and good vibes.”
