Wilmington, Delaware (March 1, 2023) — United Way of Delaware (UWDE), Christiana Care and Always Best Care recently launched A Helping Hand to support senior citizens. Throughout March and April, the collaboration will focus on getting Delaware’s seniors the critical resources they need.

“United Way of Delaware’s collaboration with Christiana Care and Always Best Care is rooted in our passion to empower the most vulnerable Delawareans,” said Michelle A. Taylor, President and CEO of United Way of Delaware. “We are committed to ensuring that seniors across the state have the resources they need to thrive.”

Items such as light bulbs, adult diapers, trash bags, disinfectant wipes, and more can be donated in person at these participating senior centers:

  • Absalom Jones Senior Center
  • Oak Grove Senior Center
  • MOT Senior Center
  • New Castle Senior Center
  • Wilmington Senior Center

According to the latest U.S. Census Bureau data, the share of older people in the U.S. living below the poverty line rose to 10.3% in 2021 from 8.9% in 2020. That means nearly 6 million older adults in our country are struggling to make ends meet.

According to the Equity Counts Data Center, in Delaware seniors make up 7% of the population living in poverty.
