August is a special time for recognizing and celebrating the invaluable contributions of Black-owned businesses nationwide. As we honor National Black Business Month, we should reflect on these businesses’ significant impact on local economies and communities, particularly in Delaware.

The History and Importance of National Black Business Month

National Black Business Month, established in 2004 by historian John William Templeton and engineer Frederick E. Jordan, is dedicated to celebrating the achievements and contributions of Black entrepreneurs. The observance highlights Black business owners’ historical and ongoing challenges and promotes initiatives supporting their success.

This month, Delawareans are reminded of our state’s rich history of Black entrepreneurship. From the early days of Black-owned shops and services to contemporary businesses making waves in various industries, the journey of Black entrepreneurs in Delaware reflects a legacy of innovation, perseverance, and community impact.

The Impact of Black-Owned Businesses on Delaware’s Future

In Delaware, Black-owned businesses are more than just economic contributors—they are catalysts of change. These enterprises are paving the way for innovation and cultural enrichment and shaping the future of local commerce and life in our state.

These businesses often lead with creativity, fueling their ability to overcome challenges and drive economic growth. By supporting and promoting Black-owned businesses, Delaware can unlock new economic opportunities and drive systemic change that benefits the entire state. As Delaware continues to evolve, the growth and success of Black-owned businesses will be instrumental in shaping a more vibrant, inclusive, and prosperous future for all its residents.

Supporting Delaware’s Black Entrepreneurs: Join the MSB Program

As part of National Black Business Month, United Way of Delaware and Stand By Me Delaware proudly promote the Minority Small Business (MSB) program, an initiative designed to support and uplift Black entrepreneurs. This program is not just about business development; it’s about fostering a supportive community of like-minded individuals committed to mutual success.

Steven Johnson from our Financial Empowerment initiative, Stand By Me, emphasizes the importance of this program:

“Black-owned businesses in Delaware are vital. According to recent data, Black-owned businesses account for approximately 10% of all small businesses in the state. These businesses employ thousands of people and generate millions in revenue annually. This economic impact cannot be understated, as it helps to build stronger, more resilient communities. As we celebrate National Black Business Month, I invite all aspiring and established Black entrepreneurs to join the MSB program. This program is more than just business development; it’s a supportive community of like-minded individuals committed to helping each other succeed. Whether you’re looking to grow your business, improve your management skills, or explore new markets, the MSB program offers the tools and support you need.”

The MSB program provides invaluable resources for business growth, including access to expert guidance, management training, and market exploration opportunities. By joining the program, you become part of a network dedicated to your success and the broader goal of fostering a thriving business ecosystem in Delaware.

Get Involved: Sign Up for the MSB Program

As we continue to celebrate National Black Business Month, we encourage all aspiring and established Black entrepreneurs in Delaware to take advantage of the opportunities available through the MSB program.
